Whether Immanuel Kant can still be considered a truly orthodox Christian according to the notions of church orthodoxy is a question that can be rightfully asked. However, this is no reason to avoid addressing the inquiries that Kant has posed with utmost clarity to central beliefs of Christian theology. These inquiries concern not only his fundamentally altered understanding of freedom but also classical theological concepts regarding the sonship of Jesus and his vicarious atoning death.

While Rudolf Langthaler, one of the foremost Kant scholars of our time, reconstructs these inquiries from Kant's work, Magnus Striet explores theological possibilities for constructively engaging with them. Both are convinced, like Kant, that a religion that unhesitatingly declares war on reason will ultimately not be able to withstand it.
