Product details

At the beginning of the Trecento, that crisis-ridden 14th century transitioning from the Middle Ages to the modern era, Dante Alighieri wrote his Commedia as a culmination of his poetic work in the newly literate Italian vernacular. This innovative and daring artistic journey explores the medieval divine order through the realms of the afterlife: Inferno (Hell), Purgatorio (Purgatory), and Paradiso (Paradise). Hartmut Köhler was awarded the German-Italian Translator Prize in 2013 for his extensively annotated new translation of Dante's Commedia.

Hartmut Köhler has left virtually no question unanswered; he has intricately woven Dante's verses into his commentary, providing historical explanations, references, cultural-historical essays, and topic-related bibliographies. (Frank Hertweck, DIE ZEIT).
