Kunststadt Nürnberg
German, Art villa in the KunstKulturQuartier, Andrea Dippel, Eva Dotterweich, Susann Scholl, Alexander Steinmüller, Bernd Zachow, 2024Product details
The Art Villa, which opened in 2014, filled a gap in the museum landscape of Nuremberg and has since enriched the once stately district of Marienvorstadt, now characterized by new buildings. Due to its history as a villa built in the late 19th century for a hop dealer and banker of Jewish descent, the Art Villa not only represents a monument-protected, meticulously restored building but also serves as a historical monument for the Jewish history of Nuremberg. As the art museum of the city of Nuremberg, the Art Villa manages the collections of the city's art collections from artists born from 1880 to the present, with connections to Nuremberg through birth, work, or death. The overarching goal of depicting Nuremberg's art history in modern times is further fulfilled with each new acquisition. The collection, which previously consisted almost exclusively of paintings and sculptures, is increasingly being opened up to new media, techniques, and materials across genres. Research, preservation, and interpretation culminate in exhibition projects, of which the Art Villa has been able to present around 40 since its inception: from small monographic solo exhibitions to large group exhibitions with over 50 participants. The focus is on the interplay between historical exhibitions and the presentation of contemporary art, as well as collaboration with groups of Nuremberg artists. This volume presents the Art Villa as a repository of the past and a source of inspiration for the present, based on the exhibitions shown over its ten years of existence.
