The old masters of art history and their works are an integral part of university studies. However, the contributions of early female art historians to the development of the discipline remain largely invisible to this day. What new perspectives on art, what methods and questions did the first female art historians, who were admitted to study in the German-speaking world since the late 19th century, develop? What fields of influence did they explore before National Socialism imposed a break for many of them, a break that could only be slowly overcome after 1945? This volume presents 24 texts created between 1910 and 1980. Experts provide context for the origins of the texts. Thus, the volume makes the works of early female art historians accessible again and invites a rediscovery of the diversity of the discipline.
