Hildebrand Gurlitt was one of those art dealers who participated in the sale of artworks that were confiscated in 1937 from German museums as "degenerate." Around 400 artworks from the context of these confiscations remained in his possession. They are now part of the Cornelius Gurlitt legacy at the Kunstmuseum Bern.

The volume is based on extensive research into the origins of Hildebrand Gurlitt's art collection. The contributions address the positioning of museum director and curator Gurlitt regarding German modernism and his role as an art dealer during the National Socialist period and in the post-war era. The authors analyze Gurlitt's role in the context of the art trade, the National Socialist art and persecution policies, and critically examine the strategies of the art market after 1945. The catalog includes all artworks in the Cornelius Gurlitt legacy that have a documented connection to the "Degenerate Art" campaign, as well as reproductions of key documents.
