Few periods in the history of German railways enjoy a similarly legendary reputation as the Reichsbahn era. Established in 1920 as a joint railway administration of the German state railways, it became the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft in 1924, before being brought back under the authority of the Reich by Hitler in 1937. Even the end of the Third Reich could not harm it, as the Reichsbahn survived forty years of the GDR and even witnessed the reunification.
