Kultur im Widerstreit

In "Kultur im Widerstreit" (Culture in Controversy), Roxanne Narz takes a look at the early feuilleton of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and for the first time sketches a media-historical panorama of this major West German media player. Using five prominent discourses as examples - the Nazi past, the life-world upheavals of the post-war period, modern literature, art and music, "1968" and the gender debates - she traces the major lines of feuilleton reporting and the editorial upheavals behind the scenes of the leading medium. Using hitherto unconsidered sources, she combines programme, institutional and contemporary history to create an overall view of the first twenty-five years of newspaper history. It is shown that the F.A.Z.'s feuilleton not only observed, commented on and helped shape the transformation of the young Federal Republic, but was also itself affected by it.
