Künstliche Grotten des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts in den preussischen Königsschlössern

The Grottensaal in the Potsdam New Palace and the Neptungrotte in Sanssouci Park are among the most famous examples of a rather rare and unusual artistic technique from the 18th century, where wall and ceiling decorations are made from glass, shells, minerals, and many other precious materials. We can also admire such grottied wall surfaces in the collection of Prussian palaces and gardens, including the lower tower cabinet and the shell hall of Rheinsberg Castle, as well as in the Egeria Grotto of Rheinsberg Park, in the shard cabinets of the New Palace, on the terrace walls in front of the picture gallery, or in the grottos of the New and Nordic Gardens. The incredible variety of shapes and materials possible in this form of decoration was highlighted at an internal specialist conference of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation.
