250 step-by-step images
With 40 sketches
With great attention to detail, the author demonstrates the diverse design of 27 nativity figures. From a single piece of wood, Mary and Joseph, the baby Jesus, various angels, the three wise men from the East, the shepherds with their sheep, as well as an ox and a donkey are carved using a total of 40 hand-drawn sketches and 250 step-by-step photos.
Each work step is illustrated in color, showing the creation of each figure from the design through the initial steps to completion. A brief section addresses the anatomy and proportions of the figures, the tools used, the selection of the right wood, and some safety tips. Another small section presents 15 examples of historical nativity figures from various eras, starting in the mid-18th century.
This way, the self-carved, personal pieces can stand under the Christmas tree instead of purchased nativity figures at the next Christmas celebration.
