Kriminelle Banden, Banditentum und Drogen: Gewalt in Teilen Kenias

Kenya has been struggling with peace issues for several decades. Criminal gangs have formed and are terrorizing some parts of the country. The number of gangs is increasing day by day, causing a lot of fear and tension. Ethnically based gangs are hired by politicians to distract political opponents, especially during elections. At times, the gangs extort money from peaceful Kenyans using unorthodox means. The criminal gangs have taken control of certain areas in major cities like Kivumbini in Nakuru, where they demand protection fees from traders and business people. In the northern Rift region of Kenya, violence has become almost a daily occurrence, with bandits terrorizing communities. Cattle theft by bandits is out of control, and security forces are overwhelmed in dealing with the problem. Elsewhere, such as in the Njoro area of Nakuru County, communal violence periodically threatens peaceful coexistence and leads to bloodshed. Many lives have been lost, and property worth millions of shillings has been destroyed. In the central region of Kenya, drugs and drug abuse have almost become the norm, negatively affecting many people, especially the youth.
