Product details
War damage was not a marginal social phenomenon, but a central feature of European post-war societies of the 20th century. The two world wars in particular were characterised by a previously unimaginable destruction of material and people due to the lowering of the thresholds of violence. In the process, an extraordinarily high number of people suffered physical and psychological injuries. In the social as well as the health consequences, physical and psychological violence remained present as the core of military action. Following on from this observation, this volume is intended as an article on the history of the continuation of war in the post-war period. The book is dedicated to this post-history as an unprecedented European collective experience of violence. The authors ask about the treatment of war-affected persons within the framework of socio-political programmes, the complex relationship between rehabilitation and integration, the political, social and medical interventions to normalise physical damage, as well as the media representations of war damage and their significance for European cultures of memory.
