Although wars are discussed in the Torah, this is done for the sake of peace. After the Shoah and with the founding of the State of Israel, the question of war and peace has become a real dilemma for Jews. The massacre by the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas on October 7, 2023, has led to a collective (re)traumatization of the Jewish community in Israel and around the world. Long-term consequences are not yet foreseeable, but they are already clearly felt. Against this backdrop, Rabbi Walter Homolka traces the Jewish struggle for war and peace: from the Hebrew Bible through rabbinic literature and Jewish religious philosophy to the current situation in the State of Israel. He demonstrates that the question of just war has given way to the challenge of achieving a just peace.
