Every symptom is an expression of an unresolved psychological problem and can be interpreted. Illness thus conveys a message and always points to something underlying. Thorwald Dethlefsen masterfully demonstrates where we can begin to recognize the meaning behind the illness. Principles that we do not live out, the shadow aspects, can lead to illness – and much more often than we generally assume. Shadow areas sink into the physical body, somatize, and suddenly they appear as symptoms. These symptoms force us to confront the very principle that we have painstakingly pushed out of our awareness, this time on a physical level. This makes it clear why we love our symptoms so little: the principles we find in the symptom are precisely those that we do not want.
