The development of a two-stage helium liquefaction machine by Heike Kamerlingh Onnes in 1908 laid the foundation for the discovery of the temperature-dependent disappearance of the residual resistance of mercury at a transition temperature of 4.2 K. This discovery from 1911 is referred to as the birth of superconductivity. Superconductivity has become one of the most interesting research focuses in physics, both theoretically and in terms of practical application. With the discovery of oxide high-temperature superconductors in 1986 by Bednorz and Müller, it became possible to work at nitrogen temperatures for the first time, making superconductivity and its applications economically interesting. For energy-related applications, the compounds Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox (Bi-2223) and YBa2Cu3O7 d (YBCO) are particularly noteworthy. A current challenge lies in the development and production of YBCO-based conductors, which are significantly superior to Bi-2223 in terms of superconducting properties.
