No country seems to be immune to corruption and its negative economic and political consequences. Globally, the phenomenon is receiving increasing attention in politics, administration, and business dealings. This is evidenced not least by the programs for awareness-raising and anti-corruption efforts of important international organizations such as the UN, OECD, EU, World Bank, and IMF.

The authors summarize current findings from country-specific corruption research. Geographical focuses include studies on Europe and East Asia, particularly considering the specific issues faced by transition countries. The comparison of country-specific investigations reveals significant parallels, but also contrasts in the manifestation of corrupt phenomena. It provides valuable insights into the relationship between societal and economic systems and corruption. Furthermore, the perspectives of international organizations, such as the International Monetary Fund and the NGO Transparency International, are placed in the context of international scholarly reflection.
