On an adventure tour to reefs, caves and climbing rocksThe Bergisches Land and the Oberbergisches Land date back to geologically ancient times. 400 million years ago, the sandstones, clay slates and greywackes that form today's Rhenish Slate Mountains were formed in the Devonian Sea. They are the remnants of an alpine-like high mountain range that once stretched from what is now Great Britain to the Erzgebirge mountains. It took 50 million years until it was weathered and eroded away again in the Upper Carboniferous period. Huge stromatopore and coral reefs grew in this sea and formed limestones in which the groundwater sometimes created large cave systems. A landscape that promises many adventures today. So find the kids' and grandparents' hiking boots and come along! We explore reefs, caves, old quarries and climbing rocks in the region between Bergisch Gladbach, Wuppertal and Gummersbach on these family-friendly excursions.
