Product details

Despite the omnipresence of conflicts, the aim is always to avoid them. In order to explore this paradox, the articles in this volume focus on the cultural dimension of conflicts. Not only personal, intra-societal and international conflicts are discussed, but also their culturally specific forms of expression. Focussing on conflict and culture means asking how conflicts are communicated, what significance is attached to them, what strategies are negotiated to mitigate or resolve them, what is considered a conflict in the first place and how conflicts can change. Conflicts are understood as an expression of human behaviour that is shaped by culture. Conflict culture therefore means that humans are not simply at the mercy of conflicts, but as cultural beings - as animal symbolicum - can also interpret, shape and change them, i.e. not only cause and exacerbate them, but ideally also resolve them.
