In many current contributions on the topic of competence/competence models, fundamental discussions of the construct of competence and competence development are often missing. Also, clear definitions and demarcations to other pedagogical key terms, such as qualification or key qualifications, are missing. As a result, ambiguities and accusations about a rampant use of words (container term, zeitgeist word) are virulent. In this book, competence and competence development are substantiated as significant genre-specific phenomena and unique characteristics of human beings, which are characterized by the acquisition, application and further development of aspects of will, knowledge and ability. Starting from the fundamental importance of competence acquisition - as the key to all problem-solving and innovative processes - personal development processes are reflected.
