Mihkel Mutt was born in 1953 in Tartu, Estonia, as the son of the renowned translator and Anglicist Oleg Mutt. He studied Estonian philology and began his career as a critic and editor. Among other roles, he served as the editor-in-chief of the cultural newspaper Sirp and, until recently, of Looming, the most important literary magazine in Estonia. Mutt has made a name for himself as an essayist, political commentator, literature and theater critic, and translator. Since the 1970s, he has published various novellas, essays, satirical novels, and a children's book. He has received numerous awards. Cornelius Hasselblatt is a Dutch Finnougrist and translator of Estonian literature. He studied and earned his doctorate at the University of Hamburg. In addition to his work as an independent translator, he taught at the universities of Hamburg and Groningen, NL.
