Few other books of the Holy Scriptures have been commented on as often and with as much intellectual effort as the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans. The fact that the Epistle to the Romans has stimulated the keen minds of theologians to investigate it more than any other sacred text lies in the immense power of thought contained within it. It raises the most difficult issues of Christian doctrine, such as: salvation through Old Testament law observance and New Testament faith, the relationship between sin and law, merit and grace, human cooperation in salvation and divine predestination, the doctrines of original sin and redemption through Christ, and it addresses these questions in often quite intricate lines of reasoning.
