Product details
Colonialism is hardly a topic in Switzerland. However, although the country had no colonies, Swiss companies and migrants can be found in all colonies around the world. Using the example of the trading city of Singapore and the plantation belt in Sumatra, Andreas Zangger examines Switzerland's relationship with colonialism between 1860 and 1930. Through migration history and transnational approaches, he traces the establishment of networks and analyzes the relationships with colonial powers as well as with the colonized. Zangger reveals the interconnections between Switzerland and Southeast Asia and demonstrates the significance of the so-called Swiss colonies overseas for industry, trade, and science in Switzerland.
