Migration and nationalism

Around the turn of the millennium, it seemed that the end of nation-states had arrived. However, a renaissance of the nation-state is currently taking hold, particularly in Germany's public perception, triggered by the refugee crisis of 2015. This volume expands the perspective beyond the current situation and offers a historical discussion of the connections between migration and nationalism. It becomes clear that migration is a process that has been quite common throughout history, which needs to be utilized and de-ideologized. The dangers to society and the state lie less in the realm of concrete politics and more in the trivialization or minimization of extreme nationalist tendencies. In contrast, the book presents a well-founded historical description and assessment of migration and nationalism in modern times and calls for a more measured engagement with these issues.
