Language is a distant force of the body. Language is the touch of bodies across distance. Prompted by the pandemic-related interruptions to rehearsals and performances at the theater, Ewald Palmetshofer embarks on a quest to explore what would be missed if theater were to actually disappear. For him, writing for the theater is distinctly writing for bodies, a language that relies on embodiment through others. His reflections on dramatic writing lead from the speaking body to its touchability through language, from the co-presence of bodies to the co-presence of a shared moment between actors and audience, culminating in an ethical imperative of vulnerability. The book is based on Ewald Palmetshofer's lectures as part of the 9th Saarbrücken Poetics Professorship for Drama.
