Alfred Hartmann was born at Thunstetten Castle near Langenthal. He attended the college in Solothurn and studied law at the universities of Munich and Heidelberg. He expanded his studies in Berlin and Paris with literary work. From 1836 onwards, Hartmann lived in Solothurn. He published several literary and satirical magazines, among others with the Olten painter Martin Disteli. Hartmann also worked as a farmer and found the literary material that he processed in his Kilt evening stories and other works.
