Product details

László Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946), painter, photographer, Bauhaus teacher, and founder of the New Bauhaus and the School of Design in Chicago, was one of the first multimedia artists who practiced painting, sculpture, photography, film, and design as equal art forms. As one of the key figures of modernism, his works set standards that extend to the present day. Appointed by Walter Gropius in 1923 as the successor to Johannes Itten at the Bauhaus in Weimar, László Moholy-Nagy moved with the school to Dessau before leaving Nazi Germany in 1933 and eventually finding his second home in Chicago in 1937. Both as a teacher and an artist, he pursued his revolutionary vision of integrating artistic activity into everyday life, thereby uniting art and life. Following his radical experimental approach of not allowing any aesthetic hierarchy in his works, Moholy-Nagy navigated confidently between painting, photography, and film, defining himself simultaneously as a painter and a photographer. He made a significant contribution to the appreciation of photography, which had not yet been regarded as art as a new medium. This volume provides an excellent insight into the life and work of the avant-garde artist.
