As the driving and most radical force of the artist community "Brücke," Kirchner began a promising career that reached its first peak with his expressive works from the Berlin years. His almost ecstatic creative drive coincided with one of the loneliest times of my life, during which a tormenting restlessness drove me outside day and night. After Kirchner found a new home in Davos in 1917, his tension-filled life continued to be marked by psychologically unstable phases and unbroken creative energy. Striving for the proper reception of his works, he invented the art critic Louis de Marsalle during these years, under whose pseudonym Kirchner published reviews of his own works. This colorful and fascinating artistic personality is portrayed by Thorsten Sadowsky, the author of this volume, through exemplary works.
