Product details

On November 7, 1913, Albert Camus was born in Mondovi, Algeria, to the son of an Alsatian farmworker and a Spanish woman. In 1932, he began studying philosophy in Algiers. He suffered from repeated bouts of tuberculosis. After touring with the Radio-Alger theater troupe and being excluded from the state examination for health reasons, he founded the "Théâtre de l'Equipe" in 1937. As a journalist, he denounced the colonial injustices in Algeria. In 1939, he volunteered for military service but was rejected for health reasons. In 1940, he was expelled from Algeria and went to Paris as a reporter for the newspaper "Paris-Soir." Later that same year, he returned to Algeria but moved back to France in 1942, where he joined the resistance group "Combat." In 1943, he was sent by "Combat" to Paris, where he worked as an editor at the Gallimard publishing house. Here, he co-founded the illegal newspaper "Combat." In 1947, he left the now-legal newspaper as it changed ownership and political direction. In 1957, he became director at the Parisian publisher Gallimard and received the Nobel Prize in Literature for his significant literary creation, which insightfully illuminated the issues of human conscience in our time. The writer, playwright, and journalist died in a car accident on January 4, 1960, near La Chapelle Champigny in France.
