Kleines Angeln-ABC

In 1847, the "Taschenbuch für Reisende" (Pocket Book for Travellers) described the landscape of Angeln as a "fertile peninsula which deserves to be visited to a high degree because of its charming nature and interesting peculiarities". Surrounded by the Schlei, the Baltic Sea and the Flensburg Fjord, the landscape of Angeln is not only considered the home of the Angles who set out for Britain in the 5th century, but has also developed some peculiarities and traditions that are considered typical for this region. Angeln developed a special form of Low German in its language, with "Schnüsch" and "Angler Muck" or the peculiar table custom of "Letzten Stück". Places like the Scheersberg or Kappeln with the last herring fence are well known beyond the region, as are memorials like Idstedt or Oeversee, where decisive events in the history of Schleswig-Holstein took place.
