In hospital room No. 6 of a hospital in the Russian province lives the official Ivan Dmitric Gromov. He allegedly suffers from delusions of persecution, which is why he is housed here in the ward for the mentally ill. The chief physician of the hospital, Dr. Andrej Efimyc Ragin, has admitted him himself. By chance he gets into conversation with Gromov and discovers in him the only reasonable interlocutor of the whole provincial nest. The conversations about God and the world become more and more frequent. Rumors begin to swirl around Dr. Ragin because of his frequent visits to hospital room No. 6; he too feels increasingly observed, overheard, persecuted ...
