Despite their size, small buildings are essential components of the metropolis and testify to its development. Even today, they are indispensable for the smooth functioning of the city, yet their inconspicuous size often works against them. When their existence is taken for granted, they lose their justification when the city's requirements change and often have to make way. In the best case, they are relocated to a less desirable location, thus being torn from their original context; in the worst case, they are completely removed. The book provides insight into the universe of these 'significant trivialities' in Vienna, traces their historical development, and illustrates their abundance, diversity, quality, and relevance through a selection of small buildings constructed between 1888 and the 1980s that still exist today.
