The young tailor's apprentice Wenzel, penniless but well-dressed, is looking for work and is picked up by a coachman on his way. Upon his arrival in the town of Goldach, he is promptly mistaken for the owner of the carriage and is treated at the inn "Zur Waage" as the "Polish Count Strapinski." Out of shyness and shame, he does not dare to reveal his true identity. Just as he is about to make his escape, he meets the charming daughter of the local councilor, Nette, and the situation intensifies. Gottfried Keller's novella from the cycle "The People of Seldwyla" is one of the most famous tales in German literature and is published for the first time illustrated in the Insel-Bücherei with the wonderful images by Ulrike Möltgen.
