For a long-lasting adhesive bond to zirconium dioxide ceramics, sandblasting the bonding surfaces is considered essential in today's bonding systems. However, this process can weaken the ceramic structure by creating surface defects. Therefore, it is desirable to either forgo sandblasting or to reduce the blasting pressure. Regardless of the use of primers, the question has been addressed regarding the extent to which reducing the blasting pressure or forgoing sandblasting affects bond strength. Three different surface conditions (polished, sandblasted at 0.05 MPa, 0.25 MPa), four different primers, and two different adhesives were tested under standardized conditions. Acrylic glass tubes filled with composite were bonded to the previously conditioned ceramic discs and subjected to various storage conditions until failure.
