The Handbook of Geography by Claudius Ptolemy, written shortly after 150 AD in Alexandria, is one of the most significant scientific works of ancient literature. In its 8 books, it summarizes all the geographical knowledge of antiquity and remains unmatched until the threshold of modern times with its innovative projection methods, approximately 8000 place names mostly defined by coordinates, and its colored atlas of maps. The work, which has not been fully edited since the edition by C.F.A. Nobbe from 1843/45, is made generally accessible again in this thoroughly revised bilingual edition.

The new edition of the Geography includes:

• A newly revised Greek text with over 1000 changes compared to Nobbe's edition, taking into full account the Istanbul manuscript of maps (Cod. Seragliensis GI 57)
• A complete German translation for the first time, with explanations and numerous localizations
• Redrawn versions of the 3 world maps and 26 country maps as specified by Ptolemy
• A detailed index of places, persons, and subjects
• A database on CD-ROM, allowing for the analysis of Ptolemy's place names from various perspectives.
