In this volume, Kerstin Wittmann-Englert and Thomas Erne present twelve churches from an architectural-historical and religious-practical perspective. The basic knowledge of church construction includes the history of the churches and the user perspective. The editors chose the twelve churches because they are characteristic of a particular epoch and at the same time offer a concise model of religious practice. The exemplary deep drillings along the history of church construction up to the most recent present are interlinked with each other by a cultural-philosophical framework narrative by Jörg Lauster. The volume ends with an essay by Paul Kahlfeldt, who develops his own systematic perspective on church construction. Not only students of architecture, cultural studies and art studies, but also those of theology are often at a loss before the works of the evening.
