When confronting the practice of the church with the concept of the church as the inaugurated Kingdom of God, as in Galatians 3:27-28, it becomes evident that the social categories of class, ethnicity, and gender contained within it have not lost their significance for the present. An analysis of pastoral professions convincingly demonstrates that the Roman Catholic Church, as an institution, is involved in the construction of gender. The institutionally gendered hierarchy of the church operates through the division of labor as an institutionalized means of reproducing the seemingly natural system of cultural dual-gendering. The division of labor between clergy and laity is structured and specialized along the fault line of gender difference and gender stereotypes. The construction of professions also has an impact.
