What do we really know about childhood today?

Childhood is a controversial topic in our society: children are expected to be supported as early as possible to succeed in later competition. The differences among children and how many of their abilities are innate often get overlooked. Children who do not fit in smoothly are quickly pathologized, and it seems that childhood increasingly consists of threats, illness, and disturbances.

Parents feel pressured to be perfect mothers and fathers of highly successful children. They face challenges in many areas: dealing with digital media, questions about optimal support, or how much freedom and control a child needs. This book highlights current developments and their causes. It aims to contribute to a more relaxed approach to our children – and to calm a discourse that oscillates between romanticizing and perfecting childhood.
