Abstract: The thesis addresses children of mentally ill parents and highlights the possibilities and limitations of intervention. In Germany, around three million children experience at least one parent suffering from a mental disorder within a year. Often, the mental illness of a parent is concealed both within and outside the family due to fear of stigmatization. Consequently, children are unable to understand their parents' behavior during an acute illness phase and often believe they are the cause of the mental problems. Furthermore, as children are at an increased risk of developing a mental disorder themselves, early preventive measures should be provided to alleviate or even prevent potential burdens for the children. However, these measures are not offered to the children soon enough, so they only receive support in the form of intervention programs when an acute crisis strains the family situation.
