Art has long been regarded as the last bastion of humanity against artificial intelligence. With AI-generated images being auctioned for millions of dollars and poetry prizes awarded to ChatGPT, the question arises: must we also concede defeat in the realm of creativity? Even if they do not qualify as art, the works of artificial intelligence nonetheless influence culture, society, and the economy – the manipulation of purchasing decisions is just one of the dangers.

Using art as an example, Dorothea Winter explores the promises and perils of employing artificial intelligence. Through the questions "What is AI?" and "What is art?" she develops robust criteria to identify and assess the influence of AI. The essay thus provides a solid foundation for engaging in the discourse and taking a stance.
