In March and April, it is still quite cold for us humans. Most plants feel the same way, which is why their main growing season only begins in May. However, a special group of plants blooms very early. Their flowering period starts with the first warm days of spring and ends with the complete leafing of the trees in May. Many of these so-called early bloomers complete their entire annual cycle within these few weeks before the trees leaf out - a unique phenomenon of our Central European forests. Why do these plants bloom in such an inhospitable time, before the main growing season? How are they able to do this compared to other plants?
