Distance is nothing when someone has a goal. Jane Austen's powers of observation and her linguistic virtuosity made works such as "Pride and Prejudice" or "Emma" classics of English literature. Witty and subtle, modern and sometimes pointed, as a chronicler of her time, she wove life lessons into her novels that have lost none of their topicality to this day. "How quickly reasons are at hand to approve what we like!" is just as much a part of this as "A clock is always too fast or too slow ..." For Jane Austen it ran too fast. She died at only 41, yet left behind a considerable literary oeuvre. Dozens of aphorisms have been selected from it and illustrated with historical Regency illustrations.
