The Celtic legends take us into the anarchic-seeming Irish-Celtic world of the early centuries of our era, when the Celtic culture on the European mainland had already been assimilated by Romans and Germans. For many generations, the popular ancient tales were passed down orally by bards and druids until Christian monks began to write them down in the 11th century. In the depiction of heroic deeds, we find realistic and mythological concepts closely intertwined, while the chroniclers simultaneously described customs and practices, as well as the common objects of material culture, with remarkable detail. Thus, these legends provide us with valuable insights into the lives of the Celts in pre-Christian times.
