Der Goldene Pavillon

In 1950, the famous Golden Pavilion in Kyoto is set ablaze – the fire ignited by a young monk from the temple. Touched by the story of the young man he visits in prison, Yukio Mishima transforms it into a novel, creating a pinnacle of his work.

The young Mizoguchi stutters and is ostracized by the other children. With each miserable and lonely moment, his longing for truth and beauty grows. When he becomes a novice at a famous temple in Kyoto, he is captivated by the all-encompassing beauty of the Golden Pavilion. Mizoguchi becomes obsessed, as the image of the pavilion haunts him everywhere, even in his relationships with women. Inevitably, he is heading towards a catastrophe and sees only one way out.
