On the 80th anniversary of the death of Danish Nobel Prize winner Henrik Pontoppidan, who was awarded in 1917: his ironic stories and travel reports. It is high time to (re)discover Henrik Pontoppidan, a nearly forgotten classic of modern literature in this country. The volume "Hardly a Day Without Spectacle" brings together twelve stories and eight essays that reflect the thematic range and stylistic diversity of this most significant representative of Danish realism. These are tales, critiques, columns, and reports that navigate the tension between romance and modernity. Pontoppidan writes about life in the countryside and in the bustling city of Copenhagen, as well as the clash between these two worlds. He addresses existential crises, political contrasts, and marginalized existences, but he also delivers remarkable travel reports - including from imperial Berlin - and takes a distinctly ironic look at everyday matters such as the state of Danish inns, hotels, and guesthouses.
