Product details

The lifestyle of the 1980s was characterized by a consumer joy fueled by flashy advertising and a colorful variety of goods from fashion, leisure, design, and entertainment technology: shoulder pads and mullet hairstyles, aerobics, Memphis style, and Neue Deutsche Welle were the trending styles, while Commodore 64, Atari, Pac-Man, and Super Mario revolutionized the electronics and media world. Global trading companies constantly expanded their product ranges with new brands. The consumer goods boom also reached the local level, such as in downtown Kiel, where new chain stores and the postmodern shopping temple Sophienhof attracted eager shoppers. This accompanying book to the exhibition "Shopping Frenzy: Consumption and Goods Worlds of the 1980s" at the Kiel City Museum Warleberger Hof addresses various aspects of consumer development, including economic conditions, advertising, and retail. It presents the diverse product groups from different industries and illustrates the development using the example of the shopping city of Kiel. Nearly 50 illustrations complement the text.
