The Second World War was only a few years ago. The adults talk about the "bad times". But the children of the small village in Mainfranken do not feel that way at all. Coal shortages and acorn coffee are just as much a part of everyday life for them as potato beetle and mouse plagues. Johanna, too, feels at home in the manageable world. Until she slowly begins to outgrow her family. She feels imprisoned and soon realises: if she wants to grow up, she has to climb over "the walls".
