The IQB Education Trend 2022 reports on the results of the third study by the Institute for Quality Development in Education (IQB) regarding language subjects at the end of lower secondary education. It examines the competencies of 9th-grade students in German, English, and French, assessed in 2022. In addition to the status report for the year 2022, the focus is on trend analyses that show how the competency levels achieved by 9th graders in the subjects studied have changed compared to the surveys conducted in 2009 and 2015. The basis for this is the binding educational standards set by the Conference of Ministers of Education for lower secondary education, which specify the competencies students should have developed by the end of their primary education and by the time they complete their secondary education. In addition to the competencies achieved by 9th graders across the states, the report also analyzes gender-related, social, and immigration-related disparities for the year 2022, and it examines how these have changed compared to the years 2009 and 2015. Various evaluations take into account the challenges associated with school operations under pandemic conditions since 2020. Additionally, findings on the motivational characteristics of students, aspects of teaching quality in German, and German and English teachers are reported. The findings of the IQB Education Trend 2022 are based on representative samples that include a total of 35,556 students from 1,755 schools across all 16 states in the Federal Republic of Germany.
