Product details

The life of Karl Rottenschlager is impressive. This biography describes his selfless work for people on the fringes of society and provides insights into the difficult everyday reality of released prisoners. Rottenschlager began his professional career as a social worker in 1973 at the Stein prison, where he was involved in the reform movement in the Austrian penal system. However, the initial enthusiasm soon faded, and the weaknesses of the system remained—particularly the lack of aftercare for those released from prison. With great persistence and personal commitment, the theologian founded the St. Pölten Emmaus Community in 1982, which today operates four residential homes and two day centers for socially disadvantaged people. In a dilapidated house in the industrial district, a family-like community was created, where Rottenschlager and other caregivers lived and worked together with released men—a "school of life" for the marginalized.

"There is no hopeless case because there are no hopeless cases for God." – Rottenschlager's life path is marked by Christian commitment to the weakest and an unwavering pursuit of social justice. In 2022, he received the Golden Honorary Badge of the Republic.

Karl Rottenschlager in his own words: "At Emmaus, we try to implement the Sermon on the Mount with meticulous work." "The dark side of abundance is the superfluous person." "My place is in the basements of humanity.".
