What we call growth today is, in reality, a tumor, a cancerous overgrowth that destroys the social organism. With an inexplicable, deadly vitality, these outgrowths metastasize and proliferate endlessly. At a certain point, production is no longer productive but destructive. Capitalism has long since surpassed this critical point. Its destructive forces produce not only ecological or social catastrophes but also mental ones. The devastating effects of capitalism suggest the assumption of a death drive. After initially introducing the death drive hesitantly, Sigmund Freud admits that he cannot think otherwise because the idea of the death drive has gained such power over him. Thinking about capitalism now also seems impossible without the assumption of the death drive.
