Product details

On August 11, 1919, the Weimar Constitution abolished theater censorship, which had been an integral part of theater until then. The freedom of art was guaranteed. The investigation sheds light on the transformations surrounding the abolition of theater censorship under the term "De-Censorship" and explores the extent to which control over theater continued nonetheless. This is particularly evident in the theater scandals of the 1920s, which often had a similarly restrictive effect as censorship. Theater scandals in the Weimar Republic are unparalleled in their intensity and frequency in theater history, yet they have been scarcely researched so far. Verbal attacks in newspapers, disturbances in the audience, and police actions were commonplace. Through exemplary case studies of theater scandals from Munich, the work examines how control shifts from the state to the public and demonstrates that through control and scandal, new public spheres in the theater of the Weimar Republic can be evidenced.
