The aim of this book is to develop the foundations of a normatively sound theory of society from Hegelian thought models of a "struggle for recognition". The systematic reconstruction of Hegelian argumentation, which constitutes the first part of the book, leads to a distinction between three forms of recognition. The second part of the work starts with the attempt to give an empirical twist to Hegelian ideas with recourse to the social psychology of G. H. Mead: in this way, an intersubjectivity-theoretical concept of the person emerges.
